Ground has been broken on the new Market Avenue hotel in Grand Forks.
Located behind 7330 2nd Street, at 151 Market Avenue, the new boutique-style hotel will be four stories tall, with 33 rooms and a conference centre.
Grand Forks Mayor Everett Baker says the development is something the city hasn’t seen in many years and is excited about the economic benefits it will bring to the community.
“We’ve seen a lot of new investment in our community in the last couple of years and some that we have not seen for quite a while, like this boutique hotel. It’ll be good for the downtown because it does not have a restaurant, so it’ll utilize the local cafés and other businesses in the downtown core.”
Once complete, it will be the only hotel in Grand Forks. Baker says the city has needed a development like this for many years.
“We have a lot of travellers that come who would like to have a hotel rather than a motel, and this will provide a good quality, choice hotel for our guests to come and stay. Particularly with our great Grand Forks Border Bruins, we have a number of people who come to our community over the weekends for these games, as well as just travellers and government officials that visit. So, it’s a real asset to our downtown.”
Construction began in early December, with Baker saying it is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
