The BC Wildfire Service will be conducting a 72-hectare ecosystem restoration burn in the Kettle River area, approximately three kilometres northwest of Rock Creek.
The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions. Test ignitions and site preparations began on Friday, September 13, and full ignitions could begin as early as Thursday, September 19.
A helicopter and/or drone will be supporting crews in ignition operations. Residents and travellers can expect to see aircraft in the area.
Smoke may impact residents near the burn area and will be highly visible from Rock Creek and surrounding communities, as well as to motorists travelling along Highways 3 and 33.
Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations. Despite all precautions to manage it, unintended smoke impacts are possible after any burn.
The BC Wildfire Service says the key goals of this prescribed burn include enhancing wildlife habitat, supporting water quality objectives, and reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the area.
