Levi Astill’s overtime winner has the Border Bruins one win away from advancing to their first ever KIJHL Teck Cup Final.
The Border Bruins erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period starting with a power-play goal by Tyler Burke and Nathan Flanagan with his first of the playoffs at 8:12 of the period.
Astill’s winner came 1:31 into overtime as he was able to grab a loose puck and fire it past Josh Hager, who made 34 saves.
It’s the first time the Dynamiters lost a game in the playoffs leading after two periods.
Eric Kahl was excellent for the Border Bruins with a 43-save performance, giving up goals to Tristan Weill late in the first period and Remy Spooner on the power-play with five minutes remaining in the second period.
The Border Bruins will now return home to Jack Goddard Memorial Arena this Friday, April 4, to try and close out the playoff series.
Young gun selection
Meanwhile, Border Bruins’ Nash Wassing is this week’s Young Guns selection after he scored five goals and added an assist in two games.
The Strathmore native netted a hat-trick in Game 1 of their series against the Kimberley Dynamiters, then followed it up with two goals, including the winner, and an assist in Game 2.
“I was finding open ice really well and my teammates were able to make great plays to find me and thankfully I was able to put the puck in the net,” said Wassing.
“I’ve felt great throughout the first two games of the series. They’ve been really fast paced and tough games, but I definitely have a ton of confidence right now so hopefully I can keep that up for the rest of the playoffs.”
Wassing has nine goals and 15 points in 12 KIJHL Teck Cup playoff games.
During the regular season, the 6-4, 200-pound forward put up 15 goals and 30 points in 40 games – his first season in the KIJHL.
