Wildfire near Grand Forks being held

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is urging residents to check reliable sources for information as they continue to provide updates on the Goosmus Wildfire, just south of the US border.

“The Goosmus Wildfire has not entered Canada,” said Mark Stephens, EOC Director and Manager of Emergency Programs with the Regional District of Kootenai Boundary.

“The fire front is still back from the border. However, we did have some spotting into Canada. All of these spot fires are listed as being held by BC Wildfire and are all less than one hectare in size.”

723 properties remain on an evacuation alert, as the BC Wildfire Service and RDKB continue to monitor the threat ahead.

“BC Wildfire’s dashboard and app are great places to find updated information, as well as our emergency.rdkb website for up-to-date information.” said Stephens.

“Information can change quickly, and that’s the best place to find it right from the source.”

“Our information officer is posting to many Facebook groups to try to dispel any misinformation that may be out there and direct people to the reliable sources.”

If you are on an alert, emergency services are advising you to be prepared to leave and have your grab and go bags ready.

There are still unfavourable weather conditions to come this week, which emergency services will be watching closely.

“The forecast that we’ve received says that we could see some gusty winds over the next couple of days.”

“Our counterparts in the United States, as well as BC wildfire crews who have gone across the border to assist our United States counterparts, are pushing hard to put in a guards and protect that fire.”

“There’s also air resources in the air today supporting the ground crews on site.”

The Goosmus Wildfire has already grown past 400 estimated hectares according to the BC Wildfire Service.

The fire was sparked by lightning earlier on September 25 south of the U.S.-Canada border.
