Updated 8:06pm: The RDKB has downgraded the evacuation order for the Goosmus Wildfire to an evacuation alert.

The wildfire is approximately 404 hectares in size with small spot fires on the Canadian side.

The US/Canada border is currently open and will remain so until 2200 tonight. It will re-open at 0700 tomorrow morning.

“Wildfires are dynamic and fast-moving events; we are grateful for the coordinated efforts from all responding agencies and we thank the public for listening to our emergency personnel and evacuating the area when asked,” said Mark Stephens, EOC Director for the RDKB.

Original Story

Grand Forks residents are alarmed by the growing plume of smoke highly visible from town this afternoon, Wednesday September 25.

Grand Forks’ Mayor Everett Baker says emergency services are responding.

“The Danville-Carson border is closed. The full fire fighting crew are responding, along with the full crew from BC wildfire.” said Baker.

“The RDKB has activated their EOC at level three. We’re waiting for updates on possible evacuation areas, but I’ve been told that the evacuation of reception center is being set up at the Jack Goddard Arena, where everyone who receives notice of either an evacuation alert or order can check in.”

“The fire has jumped the border and there has been some evacuations along the border area and Danshin village area.”

The RDKC is asking those west of Highway 41 and south of Highway 3, and any properties west of Highway 3 from Sleepy Hollow Road to Phoenix Road to evacuate immediately.

“This is a very fast moving and developing situation,” says Mark Stephens, EOC Director. “We ask everyone to stay vigilant and to keep checking the RDKB website for information.”

156 residences are on evacuation order while 567 are on evac alert.

The fire was cause by a lightning strike.
