A new boat is patrolling the waters of Christina Lake.
Christina’s Keeper was the vision of Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Director Grace McGregor.
“I’m extremely excited about it,” McGregor told Vista Radio in an interview Friday.
McGregor says the vessel will give the Christina Lake Stewardship Society consistent access for their work and the BC Conservation Officer Service the ability to do safety checks on boaters and fishers.
“You know it’s really helpful and very needed. If we’re going to look after the lake we have to provide the transportation for stewardship to get out there,” she said.
McGregor adds it will also help regional district building inspectors with access.
While there are many inland lakes that need protection, McGregor says it’s important to protect Christina Lake.
“Christina Lake has an awful lot of tourism and we appreciate that at Christina Lake. That’s our economic driver if you will. We want to keep people safe but we also want to make sure the lake stays healthy,” McGregor explained.
“I believe water is extremely important.”
Christina’s Keeper has already done a seven hour patrol with conservation officers checking on 18 boats in the country’s warmest tree-lined lake.
As for which agencies will use the boat and when, McGregor believes the groups involved are working on or have already worked out a schedule.
