Grand Forks citizen group holding town hall tonight

A Grand Forks citizen steering committee is holding a town hall meeting tonight (June 26).

The meeting at the Historic Gem Theatre on Market Avenue is meant to educate the public on four B.C. bills around emergency management, development and health.

They are Bill 31 (New Emergency Management Act), Bill 36 (Health Professions and Occupations Act) as well as Bills 44 and 47 dealing with public input on development.

Committee member Christina Abbott says the event is non-political.

“I think that really it’s up to us as citizens to make sure that we do stay informed and I know that’s not always easy especially for a generation that’s aging here in this community,” Abbott said.

Retired dentist Roger Harrington and registered nurse Corrine Mori will speak.

“She’s behind the move to bring the nurses back into this province because every other province is taking them back and because of her experience as a nurse, she has been very deeply involved, so she knows Bill 36 inside and out,” Abbott explained.

Abbott will also talk about her recent campaign to have the city enact a cosmetic pesticide ban.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. with doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Abbott says attendees will also be invited to complete a survey at the end of the two-hour event to see what they would like at future town halls.
