At least one property owner and business in downtown Grand Forks have serious concerns over a proposed boutique hotel.
Grand Forks Gazette publisher Chris Hammett and building owner Ken Flagel told city council Monday (May 27) they’re concerned about safety and accessibility.
Developer Mathew Isabelle wants to buy the property immediately behind 7330 2nd Street at 151 Market Avenue to build a 33-room hotel.
Hammett says it will seriously affect their business.
“We really need a back loading (area). I mean, I don’t wanna move. I’m sure Ken doesn’t want us to move but it’s priority for us to have a back door entrance,” Hammett said.
She also pointed to the height of the three storey building that would “tower over us” and create a small isolated tunnel-like alley – a haven for drug users. It would also eliminate a lot of parking.
“I’d just like you to consider another location because it will interfere drastically with one of your long-term businesses in town,” she said.
Council received the presentation as information but made no decisions.
Councillor Christine Thompson says the city desperately needs a hotel to accommodate events like hockey tournaments and she was not prepared to ask the developer to change the footprint of the hotel.
City council also heard there are no setback requirements for buildings in the downtown core.
The city has been in midst of negotiations with Isabelle to purchase the city-owned land between the CIBC and the future home of Lumberjack Brewing.
