Grand Forks’ next fire chief appointed

Grand Forks will be promoting from within for its next fire chief.

A late item to the agenda Monday afternoon (May 6) saw council approve the appointment of Rich Piché as fire chief.

Piché has been deputy chief with Grand Forks Fire and Rescue since the fall of 2018.

The appointment follows an extensive hiring progress that included a hiring committee.

Councillor David Mark, who was on the hiring committee, thanked everyone for applying saying there were many qualified candidates.

“It was a very competitive process with many well qualified applicants. Fire chief is a very difficult position to fill because there are many qualifications and personal qualities required for a fire chief,” Mark said.

“We came to a decision that I feel will serve the interests of our community well into the future,” he said.

Piché has been acting fire chief since the city parted ways with Jim Runciman in January.

Brittany Jalbert is Grand Forks Fire and Rescue’s second deputy fire chief.
